Remember Your First Day at Washington College?

Alumni, do you remember the first day you stepped onto the campus as a freshman? Venturing away from all of your high school friends, you no doubt worried about the first night alone with your roommate. Surely the anxiety of moving and leaving home caused some strain between you and your parents, and you felt lost navigating even the short route between the dining hall and your mailbox.

Believe it or not, some things in life never do change. I met the freshmen of the Class of 2014 today, and it was like a time warp back to my first day at WAC, seeing all of the nervous new students with enthusiasm in their eyes and teary-eyed parents at their heels.

I joined a few staff members in welcoming the newest class during Freshmen Move-In Day. We distributed their IDs and room keys, told them how to find their Peer Mentor group, and gave them tips for moving in. It was a sunny, not-so-hot morning, perfect weather for hiking all their belongings up those dorm stairs.

Even before beginning their first semester, the Class of 2014 has made their mark. They were given the choice to participate in one of six different pre-orientation experiences, from a land and sea adventure to a filmmaking and photography boot camp. Many in the class have benefited from the College's 18 million dollars in scholarship and financial aid- its largest in history. And, to top it off, this class is already setting records!

Facts about the Class of 2014:

- They are the largest class in the College's history- 420 members!
- They boast the highest high school GPA and best SAT/ACT profile in a decade.
- 13% are students of color- the largest percentage of minorities to date!
- 57% of the class is female and 43% is male.
- While over half of the class originates from Maryland, 21 states plus Argentina, China, Ethiopia, Korea, New Zealand and the territory of Guam are represented.
- 40% were members of the National Honor Society.
- A quarter of the in-state students were Maryland Distinguished scholars.
- 8% of the class are WAC legacies, meaning a family member is a student or alumnus/na of the College

This class will experience an orientation weekend packed with activities, including the first-year book, which I'm sure many of you alums remember! Students will convene in small groups facilitated by faculty and staff members to discuss their impressions of the book, Junot Díaz's The Brief, Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, this coming weekend.

Alumni Relations and The Recent Alumni and Student Involvement Committee of the Alumni Board will welcome the students with an insulated WAC mug filled with candy supplied by Career Services. After all of the welcome activities and gifts, including an all-campus picnic with fireworks the night before classes begin, the Class of 2014 should be well-prepared to start their first year.

"I AM A RAT"

Imagine beginning your first year at WAC forced to walk around campus with a large sign around your neck that says, "I AM A RAT." That's just what happened to Charles Berry '36 during his freshman year of college in 1932.

Charles came sauntering into the Alumni House this morning with a spring in his step, telling stories about how the sophomores of his time used to haze freshmen. He handed us the rat sign to preserve in our alumni archives.

At least Charles remembers something fond about this experience: "It was a great way for people to get to know you," he exclaimed. If positivity is as powerful as they say, I imagine it may be this alone that keeps 96-year-old Charles walking and talking like a man in his 70's.

I've heard a few crazy stories about the freshman hazing that used to occur back in his day, none of which are pleasant. In those times, freshmen were forced to push peanuts down the campus lawn with only their noses and stand in front of Smith Hall while upperclassmen threw rotten tomatoes at them.

It wasn't until hearing these tales that I realized how lucky I had been as a freshman. My greatest worry was just waking up in time for my 8:30 class!

How times have changed.

Mapping Their Future

It wasn't the contest to win a TomTom One 125 Portable GPS that lured me through the doors of Goldstein today. Nor was it the promise of food and door prizes that motivated my visit. It was, believe it or not, a genuine curiousity about GIS work and student-led GIS projects that enticed me to celebrate National GIS Day in the WC GIS lab for the first time.

Sadly, I never had a reason to walk into Goldstein Hall before. It was dedicated in 2000, shortly after I graduated. I stepped inside for the first time this afternoon and found Louis himself greeting me with a big smile.

I walked up to the second floor where the GIS lab is located because faculty, staff, and students were invited to hear from WC interns themselves about their personal GIS projects. In this new and growing department, students are employed to work on projects from both individual clients and from other, larger clients like the State of Maryland.

Inside was a cluster of staff and students who had come to celebrate National GIS Day. Packed closely together, curious visitors asked questions while students huddled over multiple computer screens that displayed databases, maps, and 3-D drawings, translating the images and data into simple concepts.

I talked to a few of the student interns who told me not only are they learning marketable skills, but they are paid for their work. Not a bad gig in my opinion. These 3-D models and Google Earth mapping systems look like a lot of fun to play with.

After talking with the students, I began to wonder if there is a field in which you could not find a good use for GIS. The student projects touched various areas--environmental studies, architecture, history, and even business. I spoke with sophomore, Dalbir Kaur, who is mapping a ranch in Vasser, Idaho for Ms. Daryl Swanstrom, a member of the WC Board of Visitors and Governors. Swanstrom wants information about her 1044 acre ranch so that she can strategically plan for future development of her property. To do this, Kaur uses available waypoints, video, and photos to map trails, roads, utility boxes, and buildings on Swanstrom's ranch.

Other students, like Chris Brown '12, are working on mapping the buildings of historic Chestertown. Apparently, when you layer information on top of one another, like maps and data from the census, you can learn things you may never have known before and predict trends before they occur.

Once again, I've found that Washington College has opened an excellent opportunity for its students. The future for these interns sure seems bright as the GIS field continues to grow and offers great positions as criminal mapping analysts, urban and regional planners, and geospatial technicians and analysts.

As the room filled with visitors, I walked back to the Alumni House, but not before crime mapping analyst, Caryn Thomas '05, M'09 and Lisa Jones '11 stopped me at the door to give me a prize. Ironically, it was a small globe that lights up when you throw it. I joked, "I now have the world in my hand," and then I realized that this is the gift these students have been given as they begin to map their future.

When you work in the Alumni House, there are some days when you just stumble upon something and have to smile. This was one of those times. Today, Buildings and Grounds dropped off some old photos to us that had come out of a house on Prospect Street. This picture was in that pile.

Who knows how old this photo may be. I'm guessing this was the WC Tennis Team at some time, in front of Middle Hall?

Halloween, Chestertown Style

On Halloween, you'd expect to find decorated pumpkins, colorful mums adorning porches, goulish figures in yards, and even the occasional scarecrow slumped over on a porch. This weekend, however, I found out that Chestertown takes Halloween to a whole new level. Who knew that here, even the scarecrows dress-up.

I've never been much of a Halloween fan. My childhood memories of October 31st remind me of mischievous kids smashing my pumpkins and egging my house; that always gave me a bad taste for the holiday. So, it was with a bit of hesitancy that I joined some friends last weekend to tour the town and take in the festivities.

On our walk, we found that many of the parking meters had been transformed into straw personalities. Imagine for a second, a scarecrow meets Barbara Eden...

Or, picture a Daryl Hannah scarecrow from the movie, Splash...

Or, just a scarecrow to make a point- "Adopt a rescue dog."

Only in Chestertown can you find such creativity and quirkiness! Unfortunately, there was no "George" scarecrow to be found. Maybe next year...

It just so happened that Downrigging Weekend, an event where numerous tall ships sail into C'town, coincided with Halloween this year. While the parking meter personalities were captivating, I made a point to walk to the end of High Street and take a gander at these magnificent ships.

Even though the rain flooded parts of the waterfront, making close encounters with these boats difficult, I was able to snag a shot of Captain Tom Briggs '99 hard at work on Echo Hill's boat, Annie D.

That evening, my friends and I gathered with the College community and town residents along the water to see the ships illuminated with theatrical lighting and the fireworks exploding behind them. I grabbed a cup of hot cider, courtesy of the C.V. Starr Center, and shared the moment with my WC family.

It was a lovely night with a real feeling of community. Despite its distracting beauty and oddity, the essence of what I think makes Chestertown so amazing is the kindness and trueness of its people.

For once, no one smashed my pumpkins or egged my house. I think I very much like Halloween, Chestertown Style.

The Wizard of Washington College

There's a wizard at Washington College. Really.

Unfortunately, you can rarely can spot him performing his magic, despite the near miracles he pulls off every day.

For those who don't believe it, see his latest display of spellbinding work, the new Alumni Web Site. No longer do alums need to forage through the entire WC site to find updates! Now all pertinent information is in one easy-to-navigate page.

Shane Brill '03, the web editor for the College (a.k.a. the Web "Wizard"), has been working his magic day and night to create a more dynamic and interactive presence for Washington College on the web. The WashColl site now profiles students, faculty and alumni, telling their stories and accomplishments in their own words.

To keep up with what's new in the social media world, Brill has streamed Twitter, Facebook, and other social media feeds into the site which keeps the content updated and interesting.

Alumni can stay current with new events easily by visiting and subscribing to the Google calendar, reading blogs from the WC community, and learning new ways to stay involved with the College all in one spot.

Quite possibly his biggest success thus far has been inventing online class sites. These pages will become like virtual yearbooks for each class that will never disappear; classes will enjoy archived photos from the past as well as new content from the present.

Speaking softly and carrying a big wand, (Ok, I've never SEEN the wand, but I'm convinced it's hidden under his desk somewhere.) Shane Brill applies his powers to keep the College at the forefront of e-communication. As a result, he's become a force for good, using the web to unite the entire Washington College community.

Honoring Young Alumni

Last Friday, young alumni came back in droves to celebrate the first recipient of the Alumni Horizon Ribbon, Stephen Spotswood ’99. Steve was honored for the plays he has written and produced and for the recognition he has received throughout the theatrical community.

Following the formal Convocation and Award Ceremonies in the new Gibson Center for the Arts, the Recent Alumni and Student Involvement Committee of the Alumni Board threw Steve and the many friends who came back to campus to see him, a less formal celebration in the Alumni House.

Charlie Athey ’01, Co-Chair of the Recent Alumni and Student Involvement Committee, toasted to Steve and talked about the purpose of the committee, to connect recent graduates with current students for career mentoring and networking.

Everyone enjoyed refreshments, touring the Alumni House, and catching-up with one another. The event was a huge success, and the committee hopes to host it annually to celebrate each recipient of the new young alumni award.

Making George Proud

To say “George would be proud” seems like a gross understatement if you were to walk the campus of Washington College today. Eco-friendly residence halls with geothermal heating and cooling dot the grounds, a stunning performing arts building just opened, and very shortly, a jaw-dropping student center and dining hall will be unveiled.

Construction is wrapping up on the new Hodson Hall, and I was invited to take a peek inside this afternoon. Let me start by saying, this is about as far from disco balls and 70’s décor as you can get; somehow, I don't think anyone is going to mind.

The new building is outfitted with beautiful tiles, slick fixtures, and comfortable spaces. As you pass good ol' George and enter Hodson, you see a large lobby that leads to a space some call "The Egg," an oval-shaped room with a stage that can be used for performances and meetings.

The lobby extends into a food court-type area including a coffee bar called "Java George."

Unlike in the Cove, students will have a selection of foods from which to choose. They'll have their choice of subs and wraps at the Mondo Subs station.

Or, they can visit the Coyote Grill.

If THIS doesn't totally amaze you, just wait...

The new student center will offer an open performance area, a game room and an office suite for student activities and student government. There will be pool tables, cozy rooms for gathering, x-box, flat screens and, oh yes, a bar.

Student Activities and the SGA will be housed in brand new offices with bright windows.

Architectural features abound in Hodson. This is a well-designed and constructed place that will include fun spaces for students to sit, talk, and study.

Speaking of studying, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Hodson Study Lounge remains intact and virtually untouched. That was always one of my favorite places on campus, and it's comforting to know it's still there.

Who knew tray holders could be an architectural feature?

The second floor houses the main dining space for students on the meal plan.

This floor is just as stunning, offering various food stations for drinks, pizza, salad, etc.

If it's nice outside, students may opt to eat on the Livingood Terrace and take in the views of the hill dorms.

Or, they can stay inside and hangout in the funky rooms.

Industrial-sized fans have been added to keep them cool on a hot day.

By the brand name on the fans, I can only assume they are quite powerful!

Stairs take students to a third floor which boasts even more intimate spaces for gathering and admiring the views.

Even the machine that takes dirty trays has become a part of the sleek decor!

The outside of Hodson is equally as attractive. The Kent Loop now boasts lovely, brick walkways and spacious, grassy areas.

Just in case they can't find a spot inside, students will also have the option to enjoy their meal on the lower patio.

As the tour came to an end, one question did linger in my mind: where has the disco ball gone? I had written about this once before, and I am pleased to report that the ball was saved. Pheew! I hear they might use it in the "Egg" or the new student center. To be continued...

When I left the new Hodson, I had an urge to march right over to Kevin Coveney's office and beg him to take me back as a student. I believe other alums may feel similarly when seeing it for themselves. What an incredible time to be a part of Washington College.

Yes, I think George would be proud.

So am I.

Meet Your New Alumni Leaders!

Today, the Alumni Board welcomed its three newest members: Peter Schaefer III '86, CEO of KRC Research, Charlie Athey '01, an associate attorney in Chestertown, and Heather Spurrier '00 , an associate director of development at UM. Current board members, staff, and President Tipson himself oriented Peter, Charlie, and Heather to their new positions by talking about what Washington College is like today and how they can use their talents to further strengthen the College.

Bringing his past experience working in the Admissions Office, Charlie will Co-Chair the Recent Alumni and Current Student Involvement Committee which works to connect students and recent graduates. Heather and Pete will chair the Classes and Reunions Committee together; in leading their team, they will work with class representatives and help shape the future of Washington College reunions.

There's no doubt this talented team of three, a lawyer, a CEO, and a college advancement professional will soon be making waves here at WC.

An Open Letter to Alumni from Andy Goddard '73

Andy Goddard '73 (the now former owner of Andy's) recently sent in a letter to pass onto all WC Alumni. Here it is...

To My Fellow Alumni,

What a long, strange trip it has been, indeed ! Twenty-one + years of (mostly) great memories. It took me quite a while to pack up the remaining pictures on the wall since I was constantly stopping & reminiscing. Some of you may be receiving a package in the mail. Short of building an Andy's annex onto my house, I have absolutely no space for all those pictures. And yes, I have kept my portrait and the nude sunbather. The portrait is facing the wall at the moment.

As to future plans - frankly, this was not exactly a happy ending, but I also could not contemplate ten more years of seventy hour work weeks. So, a mixed blessing. The live music was always my favorite aspect of the business, and I hope to continue working in that field.

The outcry and support from friends and alumni have been overwhelming. Thank you all! Don't forget - you were an integral part of creating Andy's as well.

The End of an Era

Utter disbelief.

That's what I felt upon first hearing Andy Goddard '73 was leaving Andy's. I think my heart actually sunk down a few inches deeper into my chest in reaction to the news. To many WAC alums, including myself, Andy's has been a Chestertown institution- a place where many of us had our first legal drink, heard incredible live music, and created unforgettable memories (some of which remained immortalized in those pictures hanging behind the bar.)

The thought of Andy not being there after 21 years was so shocking and unbelievable to all of us, it inspired news stories, rumors, and unbridled emotion. Some asked if they could chain themselves to the bar in protest while others focused their grief on honoring the culture Andy was able to bring to this quaint town on the Chester.

On Andy's last night this past Saturday, it was only fitting to pack her bar one last time, enjoy the great, live music, and honor all those moments hanging on that wall. I joined in the camaraderie of the evening, the end of an era...

While the black balloons and R.I.P. signs greeted patrons as they walked in the door, the mood inside was celebratory.

It was packed wall-to-wall, leaving me surprised I actually found a seat. There was no better way to celebrate Andy's last night than by enjoying her delicious food, token drinks, and of course, her homemade ice cream one last time.

Trying my best to enjoy one last basket of popcorn, I walked over to the machine, but it was already empty. Oh well.

Throughout the night, people took photos off of the wall and told their stories.

And this was the result of that. In the not-so-distant past, yes, people did smoke here.

Everywhere you looked, people were reminiscing and crying.

And, when the photos came down off of the wall, the memories took their places on napkins, torn paper, or whatever was handy.

Cindy stayed busy bartending past last call at 12:30am, while WAC alums spilled out onto High Street.

All in all, it was a great end to a terrific 21-year run.

Thank you, Andy. You will be missed, but I wish you well in your future adventures in life, wherever they may lead...

Pledging

A couple of weeks ago I pledged. No, not the Greek kind of pledging. I signed the Washington College Green Pledge. By doing so, I, along with other faculty, staff, students, and alumni, have made a commitment to help the environment by making eco-friendly changes in my lifestyle.

WAC created the pledge as a way of furthering its efforts to become a more environmental, sustainable campus through its "George Goes Green" program. Newsweek’s Campus Magazine actually named WC the “Sexiest in Sustainability” in 2007 because of the program.

To honor my pledge, I began walking to work. Even though the distance between my home and the Alumni House is only a mile, I figured that every little bit helps. Plus, walking is great exercise, and you can't beat this commute!

Since it was a lovely, sunny morning, I decided to share a few snapshots of sights along my walk in today...

My trip begins by crossing the scenic Chester River bridge into Kent County.

As I walk over the river, I pass the love, anger, and pure randomness carved into the bridge's railings by previous passersby...

The bridge tender is there every morning, and he always bikes to work (perhaps he signed the Green Pledge, too?)

I always want to peek inside his office to see what he does all day, but the blinds are always closed! Ah well.

Every day starts out well when you have a view like this to take in each morning!

As I walk off the bridge and into the streets, I see this sign. I'm not sure what part of Kent County isn't a "Scenic Byway," but it's good to know that I'm on it and not a congested highway somewhere, commuting to work.

I don't think I'll ever tire of Chestertown's rolling brick sidewalks and charming houses.

I walk a further and take in the quirkiness of Chestertown in all of its forms, like the produce stand that's actually in the gas station...

...or, ol' Bennett's with its Full Service gas. You don't see that too much any more!

Or, this unusual truck parked at the back.

Then, I see this sign and half wonder if I should alter my route!

But, before I know it, I've arrived at work, feeling almost as "at home" as when I left my house.

Inside the Belly of Gibson

This morning I walked inside the belly of Gibson. Since I arrived back on campus, I longed to know what lay inside the large beauty at the end of the Cater Walk. Today, my curiosity was satiated when Larry Stahl himself led our office and staff from the C.V. Starr Center on a tour of the Center.

Stahl, the Technical Director of the Performing Arts Center, took us down hallways, backstage, up and down stairs, through back doors, and across catwalks to show us all the features the new center will offer to performers and theater-goers alike.

I have to say, without Stahl, I may very well have felt like Pinocchio entering Monstro the Whale- once you’re in, you may not find your way back out for a while. However, unlike Monstro, this is the kind of place where you’d WANT to be lost- walk around a corner, and you’ll bump into a jazz trio’s practice space; peek in a room, and you could see a set come to life; or, open a door, and you just might end-up backstage!

As soon as I laid eyes on the Decker Theater, I realized what President Tipson had said was really true: “The time has come to restore the arts to their rightful place at the heart of a liberal education.” The theater is magnificent. You can almost hear “tha-thump, tha-thump, tha-thump” beating underground, beneath the seats.

Stahl explained the stage is comparable to that in old Tawes; it is 34 feet across. The theater will have the capacity to seat over 400, and it doesn’t appear that there’s a bad seat in the house!

Spaces for rehearsing and preparing for shows are equally as functional and pleasant. In keeping with tradition, the Green Room was coated with chalkboard paint so students may continue posting random quotations on the walls.

Dressing rooms for men and women are top-notch, and should make any performer feel like a star as they get in costume.

Sound and light folks will have a ball in the new spaces available for their work, including a control booth with state-of-the-art, computerized systems at their fingertips.

Around the corner, a 200-seat Recital Hall will showcase student musicians and visiting acts. The music department should feel just as proud of their stunning hall, featuring a wooden stage and gorgeous wall of windows.

The word on the street is this marvelous glass pane was flown in all the way from Italy.

There’s a lovely view of campus through the panes, no matter which way you look...

Musicians will have ample practice rooms, storage for instruments, as well as an eye-catching rehearsal area with loads of space and acoustical paneling.

No one was left out of the plans for this center. Dance will remain in the LFC, but there is rehearsal space with floor to ceiling mirrors and dance bars just in case. While it’s still getting the finishing touches put on it, the climate-controlled Kohl Art Gallery already looks stately; any student should feel honored to hang his/her artwork in this room.

But, by far, my favorite spot in the place is the experimental theater. This space is fabulously mysterious and fun!

The theater can host an audience of 175, less than half the number that Decker will hold, but there’s a more intimate atmosphere here.

And, by the number of orbs in this photo, my guess is the old ghost of Tawes has NOT moved out!

It’s obvious the amount of careful planning, painstaking work, and passionate funders that it took to make remake Gibson into a center for ALL of the arts. As we plan Reunion 2010, we hope to make the Arts a central theme, and wow…what a backdrop we have!

This morning, in the flurry of pre-Reunion madness, I was handed materials to compile into a program for the Class of 1959's 50th Reunion Dinner. In it was something I had never before seen--the Washington College Alma Mater.

I'm curious to know how many alumni realize WC has it's very own song? At the same time, I'm trying to picture this 50th Reunion class singing their hearts out to our Alma Mater on Friday night. I'm kind of sorry I'll miss that. I wonder how it sounds.

Reunion Magic

At this point in the year, students are wrapping-up finals and leaving for the summer, and there's still a week until alumni arrive. The lawn is now mowed in precise lines, maintenance is sprucing-up the buildings, and staff are hurrying to get as much done as possible before Reunion and Commencement this coming weekend.

In our office, we're handling the final details as best we can- one minute we're giving numbers to catering, making certain there's enough for everyone to eat and drink, and the next, we're reserving ponies for the children's area at the picnic. You really can't get bored in a job like this. You never know WHAT you'll be tasked with next!

The amount of organization and planning involved in Reunion and Commencement is absolutely extraordinary. For instance, Friday night alone, there are six events occurring almost simultaneously. Having only experienced past Reunions as a participant and not a staff member, I can't possibly imagine how all of the little details will fall into place. The experienced ones here tell me it just happens, as if by magic.

Magic? Seems to me you'd need darn near a miracle to pull this off.

Well, maybe there IS some sort of magical being, like a fairy, who pops in at the last moment to take care of everything with her wand. Perhaps. But I tell ya, I'd be inclined to believe in this "Reunion fairy" if I hadn't already watched my co-workers and staff in other departments drag themselves to work even when they're sick, sit in hours of planning meetings, skip lunch, try to complete ten tasks at once, and work till late into the night for weeks and weeks just to prepare it all. What they refer to as "magic," I call pure grit and honest, hard work.

Do I believe in magic? Why, yes I do. But, the only magic I find here is the miraculous work of the staff that works less for the pay they are handed and more for the college that they love.

Unburied Treasure

Neither Dr. John Seidel nor I had much time to spare, but I just couldn’t turn down his invitation for a personal tour of the Custom House. I had read about it. I had even peered in its windows. However, until today, the tall, brick building standing at the foot of High Street had been, for the most part, a mystery to me.

On my way to the house, I remembered taking Seidel’s Intro to Archaeology course in 1998. He was a new professor, and it was the first year WC had such a course. I always thought he was the coolest of all of my profs, arriving to class in a tie and hiking boots.

All I know about underwater archaeology- the field that unveils mysterious shipwrecks, airplane crashes, and dwellings now covered by rising sea levels- I learned from Dr. Seidel. Until his class, I only associated Archaeology with digging in the dirt. Tales of his travels to exotic locales and shipwreck dives intrigued me, but because he was teaching an intro course, most of what I learned came from the text, not hands-on experience.

As I walked up to the Custom House, I wondered if I might see some of the "treasures" Seidel had uncovered or pictures of shipwrecks from these far away places he used to talk about. But when I stepped inside, I forgot all of that in amazement of what I saw- an archaeology lab with volunteers carefully cleaning, identifying, and bagging artifacts! I remember hearing about Seidel’s vision long ago, to give students real-world opportunities with excavations and artifacts, and now I was watching it all come alive.

Seidel walked me into an office where I met his kind wife, Liz; she directs the lab and is a senior staff archaeologist. Then, using a lamp to illuminate an underground storage area, he explained that some believe this room was slave quarters and connected to an underground tunnel (possibly along the underground railroad.) Seidel hears this often when people find underground spaces in old houses. He’s not convinced this time. He thinks the area was used to store wine and other temperature-sensitive items.

The next room we toured was the most interesting of all. Artifacts that students have uncovered are on display here as well as lots of fancy equipment.

Seidel seemed proud of the sidescan sonar, Roxswath system, fathometer, and cesium magnetometer he was able to secure for the program. He knows these cutting-edge tools give undergraduate students here a clear advantage over students in other schools, remembering he never had access to such sophisticated apparatus as an undergrad.

I must say, the equipment IS impressive. As soon as I entered the room, my mind swirled with images of grant applications; I couldn’t imagine how much time and effort was expended trying to find funding for these high-tech tools!

Seidel told me his goal is to use this equipment with students to make the Chester the finest of all the mapped rivers in the state. Then, he stopped and immediately corrected himself, “Well, I’d like it to be the best in the country.” Thinking small is obviously not one of Seidel’s talents. It doesn't take long to realize that only a person with extraordinary vision could create a place and program such as this.

Besides a new internship program for both undergraduate and graduate students, Archaeology at WC has expanded to offer a summer field school, excavation opportunities, and a holistic insight into the Chesapeake through the new Chesapeake Semester. A new research vessel is also on its way which will give students and local schoolchildren more exposure to learning on the water and eventually more opportunity to study underwater archaeology.

While these programs and materials are no doubt remarkable, Seidel is the first to point out all of the white boxes in the back of the room. He explains that they hold all of the artifacts. “We really need a proper storage facility,” he states. There just isn’t funding for that yet.

I was taken on a quick tour of the rest of the building which is also home to the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience and the Center for Environment and Society. Built in 1745, it’s a lovely house, and I was amazed by the breadth of what occurs inside- everything from working on climate action to coordinating the George Washington book prize.

I take it Seidel is never bored, as he’s also the director of the Center for Environment and Society (an exciting area for another blog post!) Where he found the time to take me on a 45-minute tour, I will never know. I do, however, know one thing for sure— he cares deeply about this place and wants to share it with alumni.

If you’re up for it, volunteers are always needed to wash, sort, identify, and catalog artifacts or help excavate and screen soils in the field.

When I walked into the Custom House, the treasures I expected to find were photos of shipwrecks and artifacts uncovered. Strangely, it wasn't until I left the house that it hit me- the real fortune to be found here was actually this place. There was no need to locate it using sophisticated equipment or to excavate it through careful techniques. Instead, it was pure vision and hard work that unburied this treasure.

...on the Shore that is. Unfortunately, the Shoremen lost this one, but they stayed right on Salisbury through most of the game. The final score was Salisbury 12, Washington 11.

Despite the loss, there was no shortage of WAC fans or spirit!

Of course, fans on both sides came sporting their spirited t-shirts (some probably too inappropriate to show here).

The police and public safety were in full force for the event and seemed to have it all under control. There were strict rules enforced during the game, including a new tailgating policy. Despite this, everyone had a good time, with the exception, I'm sure, of the student I saw in handcuffs.

Gibson, with a Facelift

It was the view of blue sky after days of rain that drew me out of the office this sunny afternoon, but it was the sight of Gibson peeking over the Cater Walk that led me to get a closer look at the new face on campus.

What a pretty face it is! The crew is certainly coming along on this building. You can see the project's evolution through photos and even a live webcam of what it looks like right at this very moment!

While it certainly has a stunning exterior, I'm most interested in touring Gibson's inner workings--the Decker theatre, an experimental theater, a recital hall, and an art gallery. Unfortunately, the area is fenced off for now.

It looks to me like the Arts is about to get its due here at Washington College.

WAC in Bloom

It's that kind of day. You know, when the weather is so perfect that students are drawn to the campus lawn like moths to a flame. They just can't resist.

C'mon, I'm sure you all remember...The smell of the fresh cut green seems to call students who have been cooped up, waiting months for the doldrums of winter to pass, to come out and revel in the blooming cherry blossoms. It's days like this when the very idea of textbooks, papers, and study sessions is thrown right out the window, just like the old screen laying next to Middle Hall I just passed.

Get the fresh air while you can, young ladies and gents. Exam week is right around the corner.

The campus is fully in bloom and the scent of flowers drifts through the air no matter where you walk.

Even the Alumni House is looking pretty lovely these days, I must say!

Spring is Here

Nothing says "Spring is Here" like the scent of bottom paint wafting from the boat house as John Wagner prepares to liberate his fleet from winter storage.

Or, the sight of students going out for that first row or sail.

It may be because I was on the sailing team as a student, but when I see the College pier and the boats passing by on the sparking Chester, I become a little misty-eyed.

Not much has changed here...yet. The boats are still stacked up on the side near the grasses, and the boathouse itself doesn't look much different. Even the pavilion, despite a fire a few years back, looks the same as before.

However, plans may be in the works soon for a new waterfront facility. Until then, I'm content to take in the peace of this place as it is now. At least until mid-afternoon, when the teams swarm the waterfront and boats blanket the river.

But, there's a peace in that, too.

Full Throttle

It's only March, but this office has shifted into high gear, headed full throttle towards Reunion 2009. Today we met with the Reunion planners and a couple members of Ghostbox at the pavilion, the starting scene for Reunion on the River. It wasn't hard to convince me to leave the office and take a trip down to the riverfront on this sunny, 60 degree day!

The amount of planning and logistics required to pull-off a party of this scale just amazes me, and this is just ONE function out of the entire Reunion weekend! Luckily, the event geniuses that met today seemed to have everything under control.

From what Mike Buccino '99 and Ted Knight '97 told us today, they are expecting hundreds of people to attend, and I believe it. Each time I talk to a young alum, I hear that they are planning on coming and bringing all of their friends along with them.

A tent will be placed in the park in case it rains, and the pavilion will be used for additional seating. Ghostbox will perform from this stage--

I have to admit it IS exciting--a party on the Chester River and Ghostbox playing together again! It's completely different from any reunion I've attended in recent years. And, to top it all off, the event is FREE! This is one Reunion you won't want to miss!

Haunted?

Tonight, I'm alone in the Alumni House. I needed to put in some extra hours and figured I'd be more productive in the quiet after everyone went home. That was my rationale this afternoon anyway, while the sun was glorious and the house was alive with activity. However, now that it's dark and I'm alone in a creaky, old house, I'm beginning to wonder whether my logic was flawed.

I love old homes, and I feel privileged to work in such a gorgeous space. An anonymous donor recently funded a necessary renovation of this building, and it's quite impressive. During the day I relish the home's shiny, wooden floors, spacious front porch, and large windows. I take comfort in the view from my office--George standing on the campus green, keeping an eye on me from afar.

But, tonight all I notice is the unexplained sounds only an old home can produce. Pop, pop, rattle, crack. It doesn't help that one of my coworkers believes this house is haunted, either. She hears footsteps on the stairs and unfamiliar sounds when the house is empty. She calls the ghost, "Elizabeth."

Oooh, I just heard a noise. Is it Elizabeth coming up the stairs? If I see her, should I address her as "Elizabeth?" Or, should I run straight out of my office, too?

I wait and listen...no footsteps, no vaporous images floating down the hallway, no Elizabeth. Perhaps it was just the heat clicking off.

Whether she's here or not, it does get me thinking about the history of this home. When was it built? Who inhabited this house before? When did it become the Alumni House? Is it really haunted? There must be a story to this place.

Haunted? Nah. But, just in case, I think I'll pack up early and go home.

Envy

I've never been a particularly envious person. I've never wished I had been born in a different body or cried in frustration over failure to do a skill as well as someone else. But I must admit, lately, I have been finding myself feeling envy in all of its forms.

Today is no different--not after finding out about the new Chesapeake Semester WAC is starting in the fall. This is the type of thing that could turn any outdoor-loving alum into a green-eyed monster in virtually, nanoseconds.

I opened my inbox this afternoon to find an email from my former Archaeology prof, Dr. Seidel, detailing the new program-- "In this program you can kayak through marshes, crab with a waterman, explore history behind the scenes in Colonial Williamsburg, or delve into
politics and policy in Annapolis. We’ll take you on extended trips around the Bay, from the mountains to the ocean, and to a comparable estuary in Baja, Mexico. Designed as a truly interdisciplinary exploration of the nation’s largest estuary, the Chesapeake Semester will take you on a unique voyage of discovery."

As I read on, drooling over my keyboard, I learned only 12 students will be accepted into this fall's semester program. I dreamed about what it would be like to be one of the twelve--tripping around the mountains, kayaking in the oceans, and exploring Mexico, racking up class credits for it the whole time.

Just then, a cold draft came through my window and woke me; I was back in my office, feeling pure, unadulterated envy.

Birthday Ball

It had been a long time since I attended a Birthday Ball--eight years, to be exact. I wasn't sure what to expect when I walked through the door that night, but this is what I saw.

Venetian Carnivale was the theme this year. Students came dressed in old Italian costumes and masks. Fabric and chandeliers hung from the ceiling, large candelabras sat on tables, and a huge dance floor covered what was just days ago, the indoor track of the LFC.

A lot has changed since my Birthday Ball days--mainly the new area created for those 21 and older and the security for the event (everyone was frisked before they entered). But much remains the same--students spilling out of the dance floor, having a great time, the formal atmosphere, and the live band.

One thing I wasn't prepared for, however, was the apparent fascination this generation of students has with 80's music. I was surprised to hear Bon Jovi's, Living on a Prayer and other songs from that era that I had almost forgotten. The students obviously had a great time. You can see it for yourself here.

Before the Ball

Last night, the Alumni House hosted a pre-ball reception for young alumni. It was a great event that attracted alums from various classes. Some alums were having so much fun, they didn't want to move onto the ball; others came only for the reception. It was the first time a party like this was held, but it won't be the last! Keep your eyes peeled for next year's invitation. You won't want to miss this!

Yesterday, I ventured over to Roy J. Kirby Jr. Stadium because the WC Alumni Board was going to meet in the skybox. Having never been there, I took the opportuity to take a few pictures of it. A beautiful space with an impressive view!

Meeting Cokie Roberts

Last night I decided to hear a lecture sponsored by the C.V. Starr Center for the Study of the American Experience. Award-winning journalist, Cokie Roberts came to WC to discuss her books, Founding Mothers and Ladies of Liberty. Most people probably know her best from hearing her on National Public Radio or remembering her as a co-anchor of the old ABC interview program, "This Week with Sam Donaldson & Cokie Roberts."

I didn't realize she had such a fascination with the women who helped to found our country; she has done extensive research to write both of her best-selling books. Last night, she read letters that our country's fathers wrote to their wives, showing a more vulnerable side to their personalities.

She explained that the founders often wrote letters aware they were making history and knowing their letters would be read for generations to come; they didn't however, expect their personal letters to their wives to be saved. Often letters between spouses were burned in those days; these exchanges provide a glimpse into their true natures.

The women she wrote about had no official power--they could not vote or own property. Nevertheless, many wives did assert some influence over their husband's political decisions and perform essential duties overlooked by many history books.

Two Weeks and Counting

I've been in my new job for over two weeks now, and I have been soaking up as much information as one can humanly absorb about Washington College today. Here's a few things I've learned so far:

1) President Tipson--I had never met him before joining the staff, but I've found him to be a very kind man. Twice, I have spied him working out in the LFC. I'm glad to know, despite the failing economy and all the stress that must accompany his position, our fearless leader is a healthy man.

2) The Alumni Office is bustling with activity ALL OF THE TIME. I just started, but I already receive something like ten emails per minute. The staff here is always meeting, planning, talking to alumni, strategizing, leading events, etc. This month alone, there are 13 toasts to George, an all-day alumni board meeting, Convocation, and a pre-birthday ball reception at the Alumni House. The lionhearted women who do this work--Lorraine, Judie, and Rosie--never stop going. The midnight oil is often burning in this house.

3) The new dining hall, to my disappointment, has no disco ball. We can all take some comfort knowing that this is a temporary facility; the new Hodson Hall will not open until August 2009 (take a gander at what it will look like here). However, while the lighted ball paired nicely with that stylin' 70's decor in the past, it may not fit with the rendering of the new building. I'll be certain to keep you updated on the old ball's whereabouts, however.

4) If you haven't seen the new science building, it is a site to behold. As a psychology major, I practically lived in Dunning; that is why, when I walked through the new John S. Toll Science Center, I couldn't believe how disoriented I felt. See it for yourself here. And, for all the other psych majors out there, you might be interested to see the new technological labs and facilities in the psych department. Here is a virtual tour that Dr. Spilich himself created.

5) The address of the Alumni House is 226 Washington Avenue. It's obviously no accident that this is also the name of the blog. The only reason you would need to know this is if you were here in the house in case of emergency, or if you were looking for the Alumni House. I feel rather sheepish about this, but I had never been in the actual Alumni House as a student. I didn't even know where it was. It's actually a beautiful home, on the corner of Campus and Washington Avenues, and it has just had an interior facelift (photos to come soon)! You should all feel welcome to come home here anytime. This is YOUR home. Let us know you're coming, and we'll put a pot of tea on for you!

Day One

Today is my first day as the assistant director of alumni relations! I stepped into the WC Alumni House this morning, walked upstairs, and to my surprise, found flowers waiting for me in my office! Bright red and yellow tulips sat on my new desk, greeting me; they came from my new boss, Lorraine Polvinale '69 P'98, the assistant vice president for alumni relations. She said hello with a hug and gave me a tour of the house. I felt welcomed immediately.

In my new position, I am tasked with involving both students and young alums in WC alumni programs and events. I'm thrilled to be back! For those of you who don't know me, you can read about my background here.

This month, there is already much to be done--Toasts to George to attend, a Young Alumni and Student Involvement Committee to oversee, class notes to edit, and reunion committees to work with, but I thought it would be important to start blogging immediately.

I'm beginning this blog for YOU, Washington College alumni, so you can hear first-hand about the school you grew to love, your old professors, and what the Alumni House looks like inside. Perhaps you wonder whether the birthday ball is still the same or if the Sho'men are winning? What will the new performing arts center look like? Who's attending alumni events? Do students still ask George Washington if he's okay?

I will answer these questions and more by exploring the campus and surrounding community with new eyes--as an alum coming back to Washington College. And, I hope to write weekly if not daily, so that you don't have to wait months to get updates on what is going on around campus. This isn't a one-way conversation, however. I want to hear from you as well. What do you want to know about? Who do you want to read about? What ideas do you have for getting involved with the college or for connecting to other alumni?
